Jeff Matthews spent much of his working life on Dr Who, Torchwood, and many other TV programmes and films whilst trying to keep his music ‘chops’ working. He taught himself to play clarinet after hearing Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Sidney Bechet on LPs. He was 11. He then taught himself Alto sax and the rudiments of music theory. In his 20s he played in a big band with young international students. A few years ago he was part of a New Orleans style marching band that played jazz in Westminster Abbey for a memorial service. He also had the opportunity to play at a private gathering in Preservation Hall, New Orleans. He runs a six piece band playing early jazz and swing. He is retired and lives in Powys.
Paul has been a full-time professional session and jazz musician for 45 years. Studied classically from age eight and crossed the bridge to jazz in1974 aged fourteen. He turned professional in 1976 and since then has been extensively involved in everything from wedding functions to BBC broadcasts; to accompanying top jazz soloists to working with Neil Sedaka, Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones, and many more. As a writer, composer, arranger and conductor he spent many years as Musical Director in various fields from the theatre pit, to the famous Abbey Road and Sony Whitfield St Studios in London, as MD for jazz singer Salena Jones. He now takes life far more easy in semi-retirement in Powys.
